Figma moved professional interface design into the browser and made multiplayer the default — designers, PMs and engineers looking at the same live file killed the export-and-email review cycle. Components, variants and design tokens make it the backbone of most companies' design systems, and the dev mode handoff (inspect, measure, copy values) closed the designer-developer gap that plagued Sketch workflows.
Best use cases
Best for: product UI design from wireframe to pixel-perfect spec, interactive prototypes for user testing, collaborative design critiques where commenters point at the actual canvas, building and distributing a company design system, and FigJam sessions for flows and brainstorms.
Honest limitations
It needs a connection — offline editing is limited. Files with thousands of layers or heavy plugins tax the browser. Since the Adobe deal collapsed, pricing has crept upward, and the free tier caps you at limited projects with full version history reserved for paid plans. Print and illustration workflows are not the focus.
