What is a web app?

A web app is a real application that runs in your browser: a photo editor, a design tool, an IDE, a converter, a game. Modern browser technology — WebAssembly, WebGL, IndexedDB — lets these apps match desktop-class software with nothing to download or install. Some go further and are installable to your home screen (PWAs); we flag that as a bonus, never a requirement.

Who runs it

Web Apps Directory is built and maintained by Hugo Boccon, an independent developer based in Aix-en-Provence, France. It started as a personal collection of browser-based tools and grew into a public catalog when we noticed how often people asked “is there a web app for this?” on forums and social media.

We don’t take VC money, run no display ads, and have no growth target other than “the best web apps are findable here.” Revenue comes from optional fast-track submissions (€49) and transparent advertising slots.

Editorial criteria

Every listing must meet four bars:

1. Real web app— the product itself runs in the browser (not a landing page for a download). A PWA manifest or offline support earns an ‘Installable’ / ‘Offline’ badge — it is never a requirement.
2. Genuine value — the app does something useful, not a wrapper around a marketing site or a feature that already exists in the browser itself.
3. HTTPS + active — TLS valid, the app loads and works at the time of review. We periodically re-check listings and remove abandoned apps.
4. Honest — no cryptominers, no dark patterns, no fake offline support, no listings that pretend to be free but require a credit card to even open the app.

We reject roughly 30% of standard submissions. The bar is meant to be practical, not gatekeeper-y — if your app is solid, you’ll get in.

How to get listed

Send your web app to /submit. Standard review is free and takes up to four weeks; fast-track (€49) is reviewed within 48 hours and includes 72 hours of featured placement on the relevant category page. You only pay if we approve — full refund on rejection.

What makes us different
