Kahoot!
FreeLive quiz platform for classrooms and events — a host shows questions on the big screen while players answer on their own devices at kahoot.it using a game PIN, racing for the podium.
Why we recommend Kahoot!
With around 27 million monthly searches, Kahoot! is the live-quiz format — the purple lobby music is part of classroom culture on every continent. The genius is the split-screen mechanic: questions live on the shared screen, only answer shapes on your device, so heads stay up and the room plays together. Is it free? For players, completely — joining any kahoot at kahoot.it costs nothing and needs no account. Hosting has a workable free tier for teachers; bigger player limits and question types are paid.
Best use cases
How to use it: the host starts a kahoot from create.kahoot.it on a shared screen, which shows a PIN; players open kahoot.it (no install, any browser or phone), enter the PIN and a nickname, and answer by tapping the coloured shapes. Best for lesson recaps, icebreakers, staff trainings and pub-quiz-style events where speed scoring keeps everyone leaning in.
Honest limitations
Does it work offline? No — both host and every player need a live connection; a flaky school Wi-Fi mid-game is the classic failure mode. The free host tier caps player counts and locks the fancier question formats, self-paced mode is less magical than the live format, and competitive scoring can discourage slower students unless the teacher mixes in team play.
