Have I Been Pwned
FreeCheck whether your email address or passwords have appeared in known data breaches, and subscribe to alerts for future leaks. Free public service run by security researcher Troy Hunt.
Why we recommend Have I Been Pwned
Have I Been Pwned is critical internet infrastructure run as a public service: security researcher Troy Hunt aggregates billions of breached records so anyone can check exposure in seconds, and the k-anonymity design of the password-check API means even Pwned Passwords queries never reveal what you searched. Browsers, password managers and governments quietly rely on this database — 1Password, Firefox Monitor and national CERTs all query it.
Best use cases
Best for: checking every email you own after news of a major breach, setting up permanent notifications so future breaches alert you automatically, and validating that a password you are about to use has not already circulated in dumps. Domain monitoring lets IT admins watch entire company namespaces.
Honest limitations
It only knows about breaches that have surfaced publicly — absence from HIBP is not evidence of safety. It tells you that your data leaked, not what to do beyond the obvious (rotate passwords, enable 2FA). Stealer-log data inclusion is recent and coverage is inherently partial.
