Why we recommend Google Translate

'Translate' is one of the highest-volume queries on the web — about 240 million searches a month — and Google Translate is what virtually everyone means by it. It covers more than 240 languages, translates entire documents (PDF, DOCX) and full websites with formatting kept intact, reads translations aloud, and its neural models have become genuinely reliable for the world's major language pairs. Is it free? Entirely, with no usage cap for normal interactive use — the paid product is only the developer Cloud API.

Best use cases

How to use it: open translate.google.com, pick languages (or leave 'Detect language' on) and start typing — results appear as you type. Click the document tab to upload files, or paste a URL to translate a whole site. It ships a PWA manifest, so in Chrome you can click the install icon in the address bar and keep it as a standalone translation window. Best for quick comprehension, travel phrases and gisting foreign articles.

Honest limitations

Does it work offline? Not in the browser — offline language packs are a feature of the Android and iOS apps only, so the web version always needs a connection. Quality drops on low-resource languages and idiomatic or legal text, and it will happily produce fluent-sounding but wrong translations, so professional documents still need a human check. DeepL often edges it on European language nuance.
