Can you use Spotify without installing the app?

What the web player actually gives you

It is the full player rather than a preview: search across the catalogue, your own playlists, podcasts, and Spotify Connect — so the tab can drive playback on a speaker or another device the same way the desktop app does. The free tier streams the complete catalogue with ads, exactly as it does everywhere else.

It is also the version that survives a managed machine. Where an installer needs administrator rights you do not have, a browser tab needs nothing, and the catalogue entry lists it as installable straight from the browser — which is the next section.

Installing it without an app store

In Chrome or Edge, open the player and look for the install icon at the right of the address bar. Confirm, and Spotify gets its own window with no browser chrome, its own icon in your dock or taskbar, and its own entry when you alt-tab. Nothing was downloaded from a store and nothing was installed system-wide.

On Safari for macOS, File → Add to Dock does the same thing. On Android, the browser's Add to Home Screen puts an icon on the launcher. The full install path per browser covers the cases that differ.

What you give up

Offline listening is the real one. Downloading tracks for a flight is a native-app feature, and the web player does not do it — a tab needs its connection. If offline playback is the reason you are here, the web player will not replace the installed app.

Audio quality also tops out lower than the desktop client on the higher tiers, and a few advanced settings simply are not exposed. For everyday listening on a machine you do not control, none of that usually matters; for a critical listen on good headphones, it does.
