Why free does not mean rough here
Public-domain texts have been downloadable for decades, and most of them read like what they are: raw transcriptions, with hard line breaks in the middle of sentences and chapter headings that are just capital letters. Standard Ebooks starts from those same texts and does the editorial work — proofreading against scans, marking up the structure properly, setting the typography.
The result is a file that behaves like a book. Chapters are chapters, italics are italics, the title page is designed. It is the same content as a free transcription and a completely different reading experience, which is the entire point of the project.
